   EAGLE PRIDE

VARSITY The 2009 football season ended with a 14 to 26 loss at the hands of rival London.  The

Eagles got on top early with a great play from Corbin Quire recovering a fumble in the end zone.

However, we were not able to hold the lead and trailed 7 to 19 at the half.  Each team scored once

in the second half.  It was pretty much a game that typified the season.  The Eagles played hard

but was just not quite able to get over the hump.  The good news is that we played hard and that

we are close.  Now, I am well aware that close is not the goal.  I realize that we are not where we

want to be but we are making progress.  We must have a great off-season in the class-room and

in the weight room.  We  are losing a good senior class and it is very important that the returning

players continue to build on what has been started.

FRESHMEN The Eagles defeated London 14 to 6 in overtime.  Matt Toops and Joseph Francis had

their best efforts of the season.  Matt displayed the ability to run or pass.  When the Red Raiders

came up to stop the run he would dump it off to either Alex or Joseph.  The offensive line added

a strong performance and the defense, led by Mitchell Poff, did their part holding the opponents

to a single score.  Matt Toops showed his versatility stopping the two point conversion attempt

and intercepting a pass.  Great team effort and a great way to finish the season.

The Eagles 7th graders defeated the team from London 32 to 30 in overtime in what

was a terrific football game.  Congratulations to the seventh grade football team on a great year.

The Madison Plains 8th graders did their part putting a 20 to 6 final on the London team.

This was another outstanding game.  This team continued to work hard and get better each week.

By season's end this group could play with anybody.  Great job by team and coaches!

NEXT GAME

   HOME VS. CEDARVILLE

Just a note to express appreciation to our great fans.  We realize that you were there

regardless of the elements or the score.  We will continue to work hard and with your continued

support, together, we are going to achieve our goal.  Our goal?  We will not be satisfied until

the Madison Plains football team has qualified for the State Play-Off's.  This will require much

more discipline, determination, and effort in our preparation for next season.  I am optimistic

that we can "get it done".  Thanks again to all those loyal supporters!

VARSITY

If you like mud, rain, and defense you probably had a good time.  If you like winning

and you like offense than you did not enjoy the evening.  The Eagles were defeated

by Hillsboro 0 to 14.  The first half ended with a 0 to 0 score and it appeared the second half

would be more of the same until an Eagle turn-over gave Hillsboro the ball on our 3 yard line.

The Madison Plains football team is in a very difficult situation as a result of injuries.  However,

there was no lack of effort and determination.  The defense was inspired with a tremendous

effort by Corey Pruitt.  Not to be out done, Kyle Powers and Kyle Wilson had equally strong

performances and Wesley Henderson added his usual solid game.  Also, Cody Parisey played

very well on special teams and defense.

RESERVES

The game was postponed until Monday because of the heavy rains.

I will use this space to recognize some players that really stepped it up this week.  Jon Wright,

a senior, has not missed a practice or a work-out and although he has not been playing kept a

positive attitude.  Friday night he started his first varsity football game at nose tackle and did

an outstanding job.  Because of injuries, Cody Parisey went from defensive end to free safety,

A.J. Poff played defensive end rather than his offensive tackle spot, Travis Mayabb started his

first varsity game at offensive guard, James Henry (sophomore) is our tight end, Ethan Depugh

moved from nose tackle to fullback, and freshmen Seth Casto and Steve Lemieux play our

QB and split end positions.  I am really proud of these guys for working hard and doing what

ever is necessary for this football team.

VARSITY
Miami Trace defeated the Madison Plains Eagles 38 to 23.  There are three phases to a football
game.  Offense, defense, special teams and each are equally important.  We are not a team that
can be deficient in any of these areas in a game and expect to be successful.  Friday night we
scored enough points to win.  Unfortunately, we were not solid with our special teams and
defensively we gave up too many yards.  Injuries are becoming an issue as players unable to
participate are playing on both sides of the football and thus, we need two players to replace
each of them.  We just do not have the depth to do that.  It's not an excuse, it is a fact.  We need
some more younger players to step up and prepare to be Friday players.

RESERVES Trace defeated the MP Eagles 26 to 0.  The problem filters down as we have some
of our reserves playing on the varsity the freshmen become our reserve team.  This is difficult
for the young athletes.  However, this can also give them the opportunity to gain experience
at the next level.  The concern is that they may become discouraged.  We must be supportive
and encourage mental toughness.  Recognize that persistence and determination will pay off.

FRESHMEN
Our Eagles were defeated by Miami Trace 42 to 0.  The good news is that every player in the
program is having the opportunity to play a lot of football.  I believe that the only way to get
better is to play in game situations.  If that is true we are having a whole lot of people getting
better.  It is always easier when things are going well.  I really give these guys a lot of credit
for continuing to work hard.  Hard work will pay off!

VARSITY
You have to win Homecoming!  And the Madison Plains Eagles defeated the Tigers from
Greenfield 7 to 6.  You may not get excited when you see the score but it was a very exciting
high school football game.  Only when Matt McCollister intercepted a Tiger pass  in the end zone
with 53 seconds remaining in the game could the home crowd relax.  Obviously, it was a
defensive battle.  When the Eagle defense, led by junior linebacker Wes Henderson, stopped
a McClain 4th down and 1 attempt on the opponents 17 yard line there was a feeling that this
would be a Homecoming to remember.  With senior running back Kyle Powers out with an injury
it was classmates, Jake Allen and Corbin Quire, that led the offense with a strong running attack
    behind an improving offensive line.

RESERVES
McClain cancelled the reserve game so I will use this space to recognize two of the
hero's of the game.  The value of Special Teams is often mentioned but seldom is it so
obvious the importance a punter can have in a game.  It was the punting of Kyle Wilson that
continued to give McClain a long field, poor field position, and the Eagle defense the advantage.
And we can not forget that the extra point kick by Bryan Takayama was also the difference.
FRESHMEN
The young Eagles were defeated 14 to 36 by Greenfield.  To be honest, this was not one of our
better efforts.  We must recognize the the neccessity of preparation both physically and
mentally and than transfer that to the game field for the duration of the contest.  We must
learn from our experience Friday night.  You play hard from the first whistle to the last.  Only
when you make that great effort will there be any satisfaction regardless of the final score.
NEXT WEEK
Eagles will travel to Miami Trace
INJURIES
Kyle Powers remains questionalbe with a knee injury

Matt Perigo sustained a knee injury Friday night and it appears to be serious.
Keep Matt in your thoughts, we are hoping for good news from an MRI.

Much thanks for the great support from our staff, student body, and community this first half
of the 2009 football season and particularly, for the spirit displayed during this Homecoming
game.  I truly believe that it was the difference in the game.  This really was a TEAM victory!
