Latchkey program will not move ahead
An after-school childcare program will not be offered in the fall because pre-registration numbers could not support a viable program.

The county’s Educational Services Center would have provided the program to students in Madison-Plains on district grounds if 25 or more children were registered, but just 16 were on the list after a 6-week enrollment period (extended initially from a month). District officials created the operational framework for the program as an effort to alleviate childcare concerns as the district moves to a two-tier transportation schedule for the 2017-18 school year.

Information about the latchkey program was sent home with all students in K-sixth grades, posted on the district’s website, discussed at Board of Education meetings, MPAC meetings and posted on the Facebook page. A letter with a registration form was also mailed to homes with students in grades K-6 and details were shared with local media outlets.

The district will revisit the program if and when demand changes. Superintendent Dettwiller said the program could not sustain itself with fewer than 25 students.
