September 1, 2023 Update

Dear MPLSD Parents, Guardians, and Staff,

The purpose of this communication is to provide an update on how we are progressing with our investigation into the situation that occurred on a bus 10 yesterday afternoon.

This morning, we had a law enforcement K-9 at school that is trained specifically in detecting weapons.  We had the students on bus 10 exit the bus this morning in one of our parking lots and place their backpacks and bookbags in a row.  The K-9 examined the backpacks, bookbags, and the bus.  Nothing was found.

After that, we then went into a shelter-in-place mode (i.e., instruction continues but students and staff remain in their classrooms) at the 7-12 building and had the K-9 inspect all of the hallway lockers and the lockers in the PE locker rooms.  Again, nothing was found.

Our administrative team at the K-6 building visually inspected every locker at the K-6 building today.  Nothing was found.

We are also working to speak with every student who rides bus 10 to see if they have any information that can assist us in learning exactly how the magazine was found.

There is a greater presence of law enforcement on campus today, as well.

We have also debriefed with law enforcement on how matters were addressed last evening to learn how yesterday’s response could be improved.

The safety of our students and staff is our top priority.

If any other significant information becomes available, I will work to communicate it as I am able.

Thank you.

Chad Eisler, Superintendent
